New Calculator Shows Potential Impact of Florida’s Proposed Property Tax Cuts
Florida homeowners now have a new way to estimate how proposed property tax changes could affect their annual tax bills. A recently released online calculator allows residents to input their property information and see projected savings under several tax reform proposals currently being debated in Tallahassee.
The tool, created by the Hillsborough County Property Appraiser’s office, provides side-by-side comparisons showing what homeowners might pay if different legislative plans become law. The goal is to give property owners a clearer picture of how potential reforms could change their long-term housing costs rather than relying on estimates or speculation.
One example included in the calculator shows a homesteaded property with a taxable value of about $281,000 seeing its annual tax bill drop from roughly $5,750 to around $1,950 under one proposal — a reduction of nearly $3,800 per year. Some plans would eliminate certain city and county property taxes on primary residences while leaving school taxes in place.
Supporters say the measures could provide meaningful financial relief for homeowners facing rising housing costs. Critics, however, warn that large tax reductions could significantly impact local government budgets that fund services such as police, fire protection, and infrastructure.
The proposals are still moving through the legislative process and would ultimately require voter approval before taking effect, meaning final impacts remain uncertain.
